No one has already brought a newbie's perspective into this thread, so I will.
I started just a couple of months ago, fascinated by the game concept, and intrigued by its immense vastity, complex gameplay mechanics, and the interesting idea of a parallel galaxy where to have fun. Since the game started in 2003, I had many doubts about starting it in 2007: the peculiar SP system, which allows you to "level up" regardless of the time spent in the game scared me, as I somewhat knew that for many months I would've had to just grind SP to become midly effective. All the other considerations apart, what really never convinced me about playing like WoW or any other fantasy MMORPG is that until you reach the "endgame" level, you're basically nothing.
Some friends then convinced me that EVE is different, in the fact that you can, and in fact have to, specialize in one thing and become proficient in that rather than become a jack of all trades, and "be a noob" in all of them. Another thing that actually convinced me to start was the idea that every ship counts, and teamplay wins battles. A newbie like me can (or better, could) jump on a tackling frigate and try to make a difference... then onwards to cruisers, battleships and many other specialized vessels.
Well, not anymore. I understand that Titan pilots have trained for years to pilot one of those beasts, and Corporations invest billions of credits and thousands of hours to build one, but in the end people like me are left with only one option: get bored, carebearing the character, until you can field something that can resist a doomsday. I can understand that Eagle pilot that locks me and pops my Merlin or my Blackbird in one or two well aimed shots, from a huge distance! He trained for that for a long time and well, it was bad luck that he chose me and not someone else; this is a RPG and if "experience" didn't mean anything, it would be broken. I accept it.
But being squashed to bits by something I couldn't even see isn't fun. I won't comment on the other things said about Titans because I lack experience on them, but in a newbie's eyes the remote DD complitely spoils the game of any attractive. Do nothing for months, with some casual ratting/missioning, training just to survive it? Eh, it doesn't seem fun. I also wonder what the many experienced PVPers that play in corporation that own a titan think about a device that nukes a whole fleet and leaves them nothing to play with...
